Neighborhood backyard garden in Harrison aims to supply meals, fellowship

An old T-ball field alongside Burtner Highway in Harrison will remodel into a community backyard this spring, complete with veggies, herbs and a software-lending library.

Highlands Partnership Community and Citizens Hose Fireplace-EMS-Rescue, with enable from condition Sen. Lindsey Williams, are operating to offer clean meals and fellowship for Harrison residents.

“Our hope is this back garden gives everybody a serious feeling of group,” reported Autumn Monaghan of the Highlands Partnership Community. The nonprofit was founded in 2018 with the mission of bettering life for regional residents by training, career training, transportation and other initiatives.

A groundbreaking celebration is planned for 11 a.m. March 24.

A $50,000 grant secured with enable from Williams will permit Monaghan and Jim Erb, Citizens EMS supervisor, to transform a 1-acre plot of land that adjoins the ambulance company.

“It was a baseball field lots of, lots of moons ago,” Erb claimed. “Now it will aid supply new and healthful food to our Harrison people.”

The ambulance company is housed in the former Birdville Elementary School, which closed in 1989.

Monaghan co-chairs the Highlands Partnership Community with Brackenridge Mayor Lindsay Fraser. There will be a steering committee to aid style and design the back garden and give strategies to take care of food items insecurity for individuals in the course of the municipality.

It is hoped the garden not only produces foods but inspires camaraderie and a perception of inclusion.

There will be lifted beds for developing tomatoes, peppers and other veggies. In addition, academic courses will be available on web page, with a tool-lending library and a bicycle-sharing area.

Donated bikes will be set up and lent in an hard work to boost mobility in Harrison, Monaghan stated.

“It can be challenging to get all around in this article if you never generate,” she claimed.

Organizers are hoping to launch the bike software this summertime with an inaugural household enjoyment ride on Harrison’s new trail together Springhill Road.

The garden will be a room that is open to all, in which people today can stroll by way of and decide on their meal salad or lend a hand weeding and pruning.

Harvests will be utilized to support other gardens in the region, this sort of as the Greg Blythe Friendship Back garden in Tarentum and the Veggies for All plan in the Natrona portion of Harrison.

“We want to help make these areas the ideal they can be,” she said.

Monaghan credits Citizens Hose leaders for their willingness to collaborate on the project and share their home for a better great.
